Stunning Chandeliers: FAQs & Where to Find Them

When you hear the term “chandelier,” what comes to your mind first? Do you picture a glittering crystal design hanging brightly in the atrium of a hotel lobby? Or maybe you remember one from that palace you visited in Europe way back when? (Back when the world made sense.)

Well, you may think a chandelier is only for these traditional and elegant settings, but the truth is that they are just as magical in your home. In fact, by definition, a chandelier is any prominent light fixture that has multiple bulbs — which really opens up a world of possibilities!

Today, I want to share some of the FAQs I hear about chandeliers, along with a few of my favorite options in stunning yet versatile designs. Come take a look…

Q1: Should I add a chandelier or pendant to my space?

When considering pendants vs. chandeliers, the most significant determining factor is to decide how much light you will need in your space.

A chandelier illuminates a more extensive area because it has multiple bulbs, while a pendant has only one. Because it has more bulbs, it provides more ambient light and is great for places like over a table, island, or foyer entry. While both can be statement pieces, a chandelier is usually a more elaborate design, and the size and scale can dramatically impact your room.

A pendant, especially with LED bulbs, is better for task lighting placed above a kitchen island or bedside table. Pendants are smaller and configured in a singular or a multiple fixture arrangement. I love pendants just as much as chandeliers and think they both play an important role in a well-designed home. (Here are some tips for finding the perfect pendant.)

Lastly, you should also consider the size of your investment. Chandeliers are typically more expensive than a pendant, so look at all of your options and align them with the investment you have allocated to lighting.

Q2: How do I know the correct scale to purchase?

If you find a chandelier you love online, deciding if the scale is correct can be tricky. Without walls or furniture to reference, the sizes can appear deceiving. If you are lucky enough, visit a showroom with many sizes and hanging options available.

Length x Width Calculation: One of my favorite cheats for scaling a chandelier is to take the room length and width and then convert that to inches. For example, if your room is 10’ x 14’, then a good size to start with would be a 24” chandelier. See how I did that?

Over-Table Calculation: You can also use the table width as a measure. You will want a chandelier that has a diameter that is ½ to ¾ the width of the table. For example, for a table that is 48” wide, select a chandelier that is between 24”-36” in diameter.

Shape: You can also use the shape of the table to guide the choice for the shape of the chandelier. A round table will need a round fixture. A rectangular table might work with either a long or round chandelier. Meanwhile, if a table is especially long, a rectangular or linear chandelier may be needed to provide even light over the whole table.

Q3: Can I mix fixture finishes? And styles?

Finishes, yes! Often the variety is what makes the fixture interesting. Use this guide to help you choose beautiful and cohesive metal finishes for your home. For example, you could have a brass chandelier with matte black hardware in the same room — it works.

When mixing styles…proceed with caution. I suggest focusing on creating a cohesive lighting plan with a similar style throughout your home. Don't use a super modern fixture and have ultra traditional fixtures in the other rooms; it will look off-balance.

My Top 5 Chandelier Choices

1. Hubbardton Forge

This Vermont designer lighting company specializes in luxury lighting that feels like a work of art. These are upper-end fixtures, and although they may have wait times, they are not dependent on imports to fill their orders.

I personally love the Dahlia Chandelier because it’s like a beautiful sculpture for your dining room or a foyer, but Hubbardton Forge has plenty of other beautiful options as well.

2. Currey and Company

Currey and Company is a US-based company located in Atlanta, and they always have new and innovative lighting to reveal at High Point and other industry markets. They recruit designers and use innovative materials in their designs. A portion of their inventory is kept in stock, ready to ship, so if you are willing to be flexible, there are some attractive options.

Currey and Company’s Protean Chandelier (at the time of writing this) is an in-stock option and is beautiful. It is 33” in diameter, making a scaled statement, and the leaf pattern casts exciting light patterns on the walls and ceilings. Fantastic all around.

3. Visual Comfort

Visual Comfort is another company that designs its own fixtures and commissions well-known designers for private collections. Consider hanging this chandelier in a dining room or over a kitchen island. The photo below has a beach vibe and reminds me of the Pensacola gulf where we are living now!

Although finding your dream chandelier (or any light fixture) is a bit difficult right now due to supply chain issues, be flexible now and consider in-stock options if they are available. You might be surprised that what you choose will fit very nicely, and there is less debate (or indecision) when there are limited choices for you. Which can be a silver lining!

As always, we are here to help if you are searching for the right option and need a sounding board. Our Designer by Your Side service is an excellent option if you are looking for someone to help you find the lighting and design that is right for you.

Reach out for a complimentary call. I’d love to get to know you and hear about your project.

Warmly,
Sarah
