How to Pick a Design for Your Kitchen or Master Bathroom Remodel

A dream kitchen or master bathroom remodel isn’t just about reconfiguring the floor plan, opening up the space, or adding a functional island. It’s also about the interior design.

  • What colors will relax or energize you when the cooking hour strikes?

  • What materials are going to bring joy and beauty to your eyes?

  • How do you want to feel when you use these spaces?

These are the questions we’ll ask you before giving your kitchen or master bathroom a makeover. I know this might be a little unorthodox for your typical remodeling firm, but that’s because we have two domains of expertise!

As a General Contractor, Steve works with the flooring and electrical plans, tells us which walls can be moved or eliminated, comes up with space-enhancing ideas, and manages the construction details. (And he’s a genius at it.)

As an Interior Designer, I help the project reach another different design level, one that’s highly personal, professionally curated, and brings you joy every day. It’s like buying a classic black dress — the accessories make all the difference and are a reflection of the wearer!

How can you know which design will bring you the joy, relaxation & connection you crave? It starts with you...

Step 1: Idea books & photo collections

Before meeting with us for the first time, we suggest creating idea books or photo collections of kitchens you love. You could clip photos from magazines, create a Pinterest board, or print pictures from around the web.

The important part is to not think too hard about why you like a space. Let your intuition guide you. Once you have a few dozen inspirational images, move on to the next step…

Your idea books and photo collections will become a personalized mood board, like this one!

Step 2: Understand what you like and don’t like

Now that you have several photos collected, go through them again and pick out any major themes. Are you attracted to bright, white spaces? Do you love natural stone countertops and creative backsplashes? Or is it the feeling of the space that attracts you?

And ask yourself, too… what don’t you like in the photos? This is just as important to know and share!

Step 3: Renovation & Design Consultation

During our initial consultation, we’ll spend time with you in your home to learn what is working and what is not.  We listen to how you want your space to feel and how you want to use it.

This is the perfect time for you to share your inspirational images. If you don’t feel confident about your finds (or don’t have any), we have other resources and project photos on-hand that we can use to learn more about the looks you love.

Here’s another mood board we recently prepared for a client who loves fresh traditional design.

Step 4: Design Concept

We believe a good designer will bring ideas and suggestions to you that maybe you haven’t considered but will delight you once the whole look comes together. Steve and I curate ideas for you and present our renovation and design concept, which can include a new floor plan, space planning ideas, materials selections, color options, and more.

Our design concept also strikes a fine balance between what you desire and need from your space, new materials that will freshen the overall environment, and a design that incorporates the architecture of your home and the neighborhood.

We’ll get your feedback, edit the concept if needed, and zero in on the perfect design for you.

Step 5: New Kitchen or Master Bathroom Design

The last step, of course, is bringing your dream space to life! This is the part where you get to relax while we manage the details, oversee labor, place item orders, track/receive shipments, and keep you updated as the project progresses.

At the end, you get to come home to share happy tears (and champagne) in your brand new space!

Doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

So start dreaming, collect those images, and reach out to us when you’re ready to take that next step — we’ll make it beautiful and effortless.

Warmly,
Sarah
